The Joy of Cooking: From Caribbean Recipes to Crème Brulee

Tuesday, 9 November 2010

Do you find yourself cooking the same dishes week after week? Have Sunday's salmon fillets and Saturday's sausages worn out you and your family? Don't let yourself limit your palette. There are so many different options from around the world for you to consider, so break out from the boring and try something new like Caribbean recipes or even French desserts!

Next time you visit your local grocery store, instead of going to your usual haunts and picking up the same items you always seem to buy, allow yourself the chance to look around and see what else is available for you to experiment with in the kitchen.

As you go from one aisle to the next, you'll be faced with many new products that could inspire you to make something different for lunch or dinner. Whether it's selecting a new kind of meat to cook with or exploring the many British and international cheeses on sale at the dairy counter, you'll find that it really doesn't take much to change your eating habits and make meals a little more exciting.

Maybe you're looking to dish out new plates for your friends and family to enjoy but don't know where to start? Grocers have considered this possibility and for this reason, many supermarkets in the UK have flyers available in their stores with ideas for new recipes and money saving tips for your shopping.

On top of using the resources that you can find in your local supermarket, it's a good idea to head over to your local bookshop and pick up a cooking guide. If you haven't visited this section of the shop before, you'll find that there are countless recipe books available for you to choose from. This means that whether you're looking for easy-to-make meals that can be prepared and cooked quickly, or if you're hoping to learn more advanced recipes, you'll find something suitable for your needs.

Maybe you're one of the many people who have been inspired by some of Britain's top celebrity chefs? You've watched their TV shows, you've seen their adverts and you've eaten at their restaurants. Well, now you'll find that many of these chefs have published their own cookbooks so you can create the dishes that you've been drooling over all on your own!

Another great way to find new recipes is to take advantage of the Internet. There are many websites available with free recipes online, and the contents are normally organised by both the international region they reflect and their main ingredients. You could literally spend hours searching away to find the best recipe, and the chances are that after you have explored the Web, you'll have a long list of starters, mains and puddings that you'll want to try out.

As your quest to find new options for your meals continues, why not try something completely different from traditional British cuisine? While sausage and mash and shepherd's pie may be lovely, there are so many other dishes being served throughout the world that you can also bring to your own dining room table.

Why not try making a curry? You'll find that these delicious and flavoursome dishes, straight from the heart of India, are a huge hit among Brits for a reason: curries are relatively easy to cook and they aren't very time consuming. You'll find that with some key ingredients like coconut milk, a warm blend of garam masala spices and the meat or vegetables of your choosing, you can go quite far.

Even if you're not sold on completely adopting new recipes, don't be scared to try and spice up the classics you are serving. You'll find that adding new herbs and spices to season your food can really bring out new and richer tastes to both meat and vegetable dishes, and sometimes even desserts as well.

Whether you're shopping for food that caters to a vegetarian or carnivorous diet, you'll find that when you expand your horizons, meal times can be much more pleasurable experiences for you and all those who join you at your table.

Whichever way you decide to go with your cooking, it's also important to consider healthy eating tips and making reasonably-sized portions. It's okay to indulge from time to time and have a bit extra, but do be sensible and take care of yourself and those who are eating with you by making responsible choices in the kitchen.

For instance, if you've found one delicious recipe for a cheesecake and another for a crème brulee, fight the urge to serve one as a main meal and the other as a dessert. When it comes down to it, eating healthily and controlling your portions is rather easy if you have a decent amount of common sense.

With all of this considered, it is now the time to start thinking about the ways you can reinvent dinnertime with all of the delicious recipes that you have yet to try. Shake up your routine and allow yourself some time to practise cooking your new meals and you'll soon have plenty of volunteers around who will happily test the dishes out for you.

Once you've managed to perfect your new recipes or have found ways to make them even better, why not call around some friends or extended family members to have a dinner party? This way you can show off your new skills and provide a lovely and scrumptious evening to those who you hold dearest. By the end of the evening, they will surely be impressed and asking you when the next dinner party will be!

Food is boundless, plentiful and exists in many shapes and forms, allowing you to experience so many different things from just around the corner at your local grocer's. Take advantage of the many culinary options you have and you'll soon see that your life becomes all the more delicious for it.
