Thursday, 12 January 2012
THE local community has united to condemn a spate of callous burglaries against the most vulnerable residents in the Borough.
An attack on the home of a 91-year-old woman last Friday (January 6) was the second burglary in the Cedarhill area of Newpark last week.
Entry was gained to the property sometime between 11.30pm and 8.50am by removing a rear window.
It is believed a small sum of money was taken and the householder has been left badly shaken by the incident.
The crime spree continued on Sunday, January 8 when the home of a couple in their 60s was burgled.
The house at Oakfield was empty when thieves broke in through patio doors and stole various items including a television.
A 23-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were arrested at separate locations in Antrim on suspicion of breach of bail, handling stolen goods and other offences.
Local representatives have condemned those who have waged war against the elderly in recent months - in some cases subjecting them to prolonged and vicious physical assaults.
Antrim Town councillor Adrian Watson said last night that he was 'sickened' by the plague of criminality sweeping the Borough.
