Free parking in  Antrim could be just around the corner thumbnail

ANTRIM and Newtownabbey Council looks poised to deliver an early Christmas present to the traders in Antrim's beleaguered town centre by scrapping car parking charges at Castle Mall.
The council's 'parking enforcement provider' revealed this week that the 10-year-old software system which operates the barriers outside the shopping centre is no longer fit for purpose and will need replaced before the end of the year.
And that will come at a price - 20,000 to be precise.
Which has left the council in a quandary. Should it invest in the upgrade, or consider moving to pay and display? Or should it give traders and shoppers alike a break and scrap charges altogether?
The Antrim Guardian can reveal that the latter is indeed the preferred option which was put before council this week.
