‘Is £1 worth someone’s life?’ thumbnail

THE owner of a hotel near Belfast International Airport has appealed to drivers to slow down and stop parking illegally on the roadside around the airport after the death of one of his guests in a tragic accident last month.
Stephen Chick made the impassioned plea after Waterford man John Fitzgerald was hit by a vehicle outside the Ballyrobin Country Lodge Hotel on Saturday, November 19. He died at the Royal Victoria Hospital the following Tuesday.
“My staff were out tending to him and got blankets to wrap around him. I am not ashamed to say that I cried when I heard he had passed away," Mr Chick told the Antrim Guardian.
He said that many drivers park on laybys and hard shoulders around his hotel to avoid having to pay the £1 pick up/drop off fee at the airport - and urged BIA to scrap the charge.
