A LOCAL man has revealed how he was only seconds away from giving his banking details to scammers after he was sent a 'really authentic looking' email purporting to offer a tempting tax rebate.
Now Brian Lavery and local MLA Pam Cameron have warned others to be on their guard against the con gangs who are operating from all over the world.
HMRC has confirmed that it will never contact customers who are due a refund by email, text or telephone.
Mr Lavery said that the email promised a tax rebate of 685, complete with an HMRC logo and an official-looking reference number.
“I want to go public to warn people and raise awareness, and to let them know that even if they have fallen victim to this scam, it is okay to come forward and report it and try to stop it happening to someone else," he said.
