‘Water’ waste of public money thumbnail

ANTRIM and Newtownabbey Council has been accused of hosing ratepayers' money down the drain following a botanical blunder in the run-up to Garden Show Ireland.
Keen to have the historic Castle Gardens looking their very best for the event, the council spent thousands of pounds on plants and flowers.
They were duly delivered to the council's service depot at Ballyearl on April 28, and there they would remain. Well, it was Friday!
When staff returned on Monday morning it was immediately apparent that things were far from rosy.
They may have been earmarked as a centrepiece at the popular summer showcase, but it appears that council staff forgot the most important ingredient - water.
The plants had wilted in the sweltering heat, and many perished. Just how many remains a bone of contention.
“They all looked pretty dead to me," said an insider.
