‘Turkeys voting for Christmas’ thumbnail

ANTRIM and Newtownabbey Council top brass spending ratepayers' cash while councillors themselves are kept in the dark is a clear challenge to open and transparent government, it was claimed this week.
In an extraordinary move, local reps have effectively handed Council officials a blank cheque to make payments as they please.
Veteran DUP man John Smyth and UUP rep Michael Maguire both hit out at the move, expressing their concerns that a key financial lever has been wrestled from councillors' hands.
Despite spirited objections, the Policy and Governance Committee obediently accepted the shake-up - though away from the chamber some claimed that by allowing their role to be diminished, they were like 'turkeys voting for Christmas'.
