A SERIOUS incident which saw a passenger plane strike a runway approach light when taking off from Belfast International Airport could have resulted in a crash with 'multiple fatalities', an accident report has revealed.
The Air Accident Investigation Branch said the flight to Corfu in July took off with a thrust setting which was 'significantly below that required'.
In total, 185 people were on board the plane - 179 passengers and six crew.
Several safety concerns about the flight were raised in the report and, shockingly, it drew the conclusion that had the runway been shorter, the plane may have crashed.
The report read: "It was considered that, in slightly different circumstances, this event could have resulted in the loss of the aircraft with multiple fatalities."
