Masked intruder batters pensioner with a spade thumbnail

THE local community has rallied round a brave local pensioner who was brutally assaulted with a spade at his own home this week.

The elderly man managed to slam the door shut in the face of the masked intruder but his assailant used the spade to smash a window and force his way inside the house.
