Victim's family to sue Trust over hospital sex assault thumbnail

THE family of a disabled woman who was sexually assaulted at Antrim Area Hospital intend to take 'legal action' against the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, a solicitor has confirmed.
An internal investigation found that the hospital failed to provide a person-centred care plan in the treatment of the vulnerable woman who was 'violated' by an alcoholic in a mixed ward.
The revelation comes after 56-year-old recovering alcoholic Ronnie Carleton was jailed for 18 months by Judge Desmond Marrinan who criticised hospital management and their thinking behind the operation of mixed wards.
The Judge described the victim as 'utterly defenceless' and 'easy prey  to [Carleton's] sexual desires carried out in the dead of night in a place where she should have felt safe and secure.
