SHOOTING star Paul Michael has been honoured at Stormont for his contribution to the sport in Northern Ireland.
The eagle-eyed Antrim man was a key member of the Northern Ireland Olympic Skeet Shooting Team which won last year's Home International tournament after taking the scalps of England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
England, who had held the title for a quarter of a century, were hot favourites to retain their crown - but they had not counted on the steely resolve of Paul and the plucky Northern Ireland team.
In doing so they produced one of the biggest shooting shocks in years, and Sports Minister Nelson McCausland was determined to toast their success at a special reception at Stormont.
Former Councillor Paul was only too happy to oblige, telling the Guardian that it was one of the high points in a distinguished seven-year career in the Northern Ireland blazer.
“This was a recognition for the entire team and we were all delighted to be welcomed by the Minister at Stormont," he said.
“On a personal note, I was honoured to be there. The event will certainly live on in the memory.
“It was a fantastic experience to compete for your country and to win against all the odds. To then get invited to the seat of government in Northern Ireland was just the icing on the cake."
The Sports Minister said Paul and his team mates had brought glory to the province.
“I welcome this opportunity to congratulate the Northern Ireland Olympic Skeet Shooting Team on winning the 2009 Home International Tournament," said Mr McCausland.
