Paralympic warm-up at the Antrim Forum

Thursday, 26 January 2012

Antrim Forum will host a special training camp to four of the wheelchair basketball teams who will compete in the 2012 Paralympic Games.
The event, which will take place from February 6-9 will see Paralympic teams from Italy, Turkey, Poland and Great Britain in attendance at the International Wheelchair Basketball Challenge.
The teams, which are four of the twelve who have qualified for the Paralympic Games, will play matches in the challenge, giving them a unique opportunity to take on teams which they may face in London.
Once the matches are over, there will be a medal ceremony and event on the final day to celebrate the success of the four teams involved, including the GB team which is rumoured to contain Northern Irish athletes.
Organised by Disability psort NI in association with Antrim Borough Council, the challenge is the latest in a series of events coming to the province.
Spokeswoman Joan Grenville said: "The plans have been in place for a couple of years to allow them to come here and train before the events.
“We've already had Boccia and table tennis amongst others and we have looked at ways to tailor the events to suit the teams.
“For the wheelchair basketball teams, playing against each other gives them a training advantage they wouldn't otherwise have had. And it's a great boost for Antrim before the Games."
