Allen Park: re-vamp planned.
Antrim Council has agreed in principle to a multi-million pound refurbishment and extension at Allen Park which will include a large extension and two 3G pitches.
A number of options were presented to members at last week's Development and Leisure Commitee to revamp the public facility which opened in 1996.
Their preferred project would also include two new grass pitches, an upgrade to the driving range, refurbishment of the existing clubhouse, new changing rooms and a sports hall/function room.
Despite the substantial initial cost, it is expected that increased usage due to the new and improved facilities will actually save in the region of £85,000 per year.
Welcoming the plans, SDLP rep Thomas Burns said: "I would particularly welcome the installation of 3G pitches which can be used many times per week in all weathers.
“A sports hall would also be of great benefit and open up Allen Park to a host of different sports and events."
Ivor McMullan, Assistant Director of Recreation, commented: "This option gives us the opportunity for much more footfall and it will also balance the indoor and outdoor facilities."
