IN the run up to the Blind Golfers' British Open championships, being held at Massereene Golf Club this August, optimism is high that the bad weather which blighted the tournament three years ago will not return, as organisers and competitors get down to their pre-tournament duties.
Blind and visually impaired competitors from around the world will compete on the course from August 6-9, shortly before the World Championships are held in Belfast from August 10-12.
Together with Massereene Club Captain, Sean McHugh, and Chairman of Northern Ireland Blind Golf, Drew Cochrane, the organiser at Massereene, Danny Corrigan, spoke of his pride in the club, and its members - many of whom would be giving up their free time to volunteer at the competition.
“The members are so unselfish," said Danny - a veteran of the club for over 22 years. "This is three days when they would usually be playing golf. So many of them are giving up their time to support the club and volunteer - they will be acting as stewards, helping to drive the carts, marking scores etc. They've been fantastic.
“Sean, as club captain, will be doing the opening welcome, meeting people and stepping out on the course. This year there will be competitors from 12 or 13 countries."
Three years ago the competition was rained out, but Danny said that, despite the weather, people came into the clubhouse and had a drink and a singsong.
“It was too dangerous to play, but they made up for it. Everybody came into the clubhouse and we had people singing and really pulling together."
The infrastructure available in the Antrim area is one reason why organisers believe this year the tournament will be a success.
“You have the airport just a few miles away so all the international competitors can be here within minutes," said Drew, who will be competing in the competition.
