A stroll down memory lane for young footballers

BACK before the dawn of digital media where pictures appear within minutes of being taken, young sports men and women had to show some patience as they waited to see their photos in print in the Antrim Guardian.

These local lads from the St Comgall’s five a side team were undeterred by the wait as their happy smiles show following an excellent performance in their home town.

The year was 1976 and looking fresh faced on the left of the picture is none other than local Alliance rep, Neil Kelly.

Also pictured are his teammates - Kevin McAuley, Gabriel Slevin, Tony Fitzsimmons, Gerald Shannon and Donald Liddy.

Mr Kelly and his comrades are fresh-faced as the picture harks back to their P7 days but their youth certainly didn’t hinder them in giving their all in their chosen sport.

The competition they took part in was held in the Castle Grounds in what is now known as the Parterre Garden.
