National Crime Agency to join Muckamore Abbey abuse probe

AS the investigation into the alleged abuse of patients in Muckamore Abbey continues to widen, it has emerged that the National Crime Agency has been appointed to assist the investigation.

To date 13 staff - most of them nurses - have been suspended from the hospital.

It has been alleged that some were caught on camera apparently kicking and punching vulnerable patients. There have also been reports of ‘unauthorised seclusion’ and of patients being left in the dark unsupervised.

A group has been set up to review more than 90,000 hours of CCTV footage, though given the harrowing nature of the task it has been reported that some have asked to be stood down.

It is understood that the police are now actively investigating 132 incidents at Muckamore.
