AN outspoken former Mayor of Antrim has expressed ‘shock and concern’ at the decision by some members of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council’s influential Planning Committee not to attend the monthly site meetings.
The gatherings are designed to literally show members the lay of the land when considering Planning applications - and to give them the fullest possible understanding of the potential impact of new building work on the environment and the neighbours.
The visits are not compulsory, but many of the 12 elected reps charged with the task of deliberating over complex applications clearly see them as a valuable tool.
Others, however, apparently do not.
The monthly roll call, which Adrian Watson received through the Freedom of Information Act, reveals that some members have seldom taken up the offer in years.
