DUNDROD Bowling Club's Nigel Charles has helped the Ireland team retain the Short Mat Players Tour World Cup title for the third year in a row.
The Ireland team - all newcomers - also consisted of Glenn Harvey, Gary McNabb and Don McNamar and were victorious against a strong and highest ranked England team in the final, winning 5.5 to 0.5.
The Ireland team topped their qualifying group with comfortable wins of 5-1 against the Isle of Man, 6-0 over the United Arab Emirates and 5-1 against Belgium.
The final group game was a close affair with a 3.5-2.5 victory over previous winners, Sweden.
In the semi-final the Ireland team saw off the challenge of Wales with a 5-1 win.
Ireland met England in the final after the English team defeated Sweden in their semi-final, 4-2.
This was a fantastic team effort and achievement to win the World Cup, considering all the players were making their debut at this event.
Nigel said: “It's an unbelievable feeling to win the Short Mat Players Tour World Cup and I'm very proud to represent Ireland, Dundrod Bowling Club and the sport of bowls in the wider area of Antrim.”
Mr Charles, a teacher, has played competitively all over the world, including trips to Belgium, Norway, Romania, Italy and further afield.
The Irish Open will take place on September 15 and 16.
