A WOMAN who was shot by her abusive partner and a man who helped free his mother from prison after she suffered years of coercive control at the hands of his father will speak out in the borough to mark International Womens’ Day.

The “It Starts with YOU! Accelerate Action to End Violence Against Women and Girls” event takes place on Thursday 6 March, from 9.30am to 2pm, in the Theatre at The Mill - an event for members of the community to hear stories of survival, advocacy, activism and courage.

Keynote Speaker Rachel Williams spent 18 years in an abusive relationship before she was shot and severely injured by her violent partner in 2011.

Rachel spent several weeks in hospital and now lives with life altering injuries but has committed herself to standing up to domestic abuse and campaigns tirelessly to putting an end to it.

David Challen is a domestic abuse campaigner, survivor, advisor and keynote speaker. He successfully campaigned to free his mother, Sally Challen, after almost a decade in prison in a landmark appeal in 2019 that made national and international news, having fought to recognise the lifetime of coercive control she suffered from his father.

David continues to speak out against men's violence against women, coercive control and the impact of domestic abuse on children, as well as men's role in tackling misogyny.

Kathryn Torney, freelance journalist and Tahnee McCorry CEO of White Ribbon NI will also speak at the event.

The following day, AccelerateHER – Women Shaping Tomorrow, Today!, in partnership with Go Succeed, will be held at the Rabbit Hotel and Retreat on Friday 7 March from 10am to 2.30pm:

The event celebrates International Women’s Day with a focus on accelerating action for local women in all aspects of the business world.

This event shines a spotlight on the inspiring local women who are driving change, breaking barriers, and shaping the future of business.

Attendees can explore how to create more opportunities, amplify voices, and take bold steps toward a more inclusive, innovative, and collaborative future.

Compered by Lynda Bryans, this event will see two keynote speakers, Gemma Overend, owner of Gemma’s Cakes and The Creative Business Hub, and Lisa Elliott, Coach and Founder of Fit after 40.

There will also be a fireside panel session with Shorlagh McConville (Mivan), Christine Stewart (The Staging Studio NI & Local Women Connect) and Majella McAlister (Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Economic Development and Planning, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council).

Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit advice clinics manned by industry professionals on topics such as planning, finance, communications and strategy, women’s health, stress management and much more.
