SINN Féin’s Declan Kearney has welcomed completion of the resurfacing of a popular footway bordering the ‘Fairy Hill’ in Rathenraw.

The South Antrim MLA spoke out after inspecting the resurfacing scheme.

“I was very pleased to inspect the completed high quality upgrade of the footway bordering the ‘Fairy Hill’ in Rathenraw, along with my Party colleague and Antrim Town councillor, Lucille O’Hagan,” he said.

“This path had been in a state of serious disrepair for many years, and despite the numerous presenting hazards, it remains a popular route for local people, including dog walkers.

“However, given the broken and uneven surface, it was totally unsuitable for wheelchair users.

“Following interventions made with the Department for Infrastructure, through our multiagency forum which exists to promote and deliver on estates’ regeneration, including Rathenraw, we secured a resurfacing and upgrade of the footway.

“In addition to the resurfacing, Councillor O’Hagan and I sought an additional link path from the main footway down onto the roadside opposite the pedestrian access for the Rathenraw Community Centre.

“This incorporates a safety rail where the path meets the roadway, and corresponding dropped kerbs which will accommodate wheelchair users and prams.

“I want to thank DfI officials for their attention to this much needed improvement which is already being welcomed throughout the Rathenraw community.

“This scheme is the latest in a series, which have been implemented within the estate during the last two years to enhance the local environment, improve service delivery, and make Rathenraw an even more attractive location for local residents.

“It is another positive example of good partnership working.”
