Waste collection contractor asked to appear before councillors

It's been proposed that Bryson be invited to Antrim and Newtownabbey Council to discuss issues with the collection of bins and recycling containers across the borough.

Councillor Billy Webb of Alliance made the call at a full monthly meeting of council on Monday night, following weeks of complaints from constituents.

While he said he was a supporter of the triple-stack system, Councillor Webb noted that residents and elected members were ‘frustrated’ by recent problems with the service, adding: “I want the contractors to sit up there in front of me and explain what is happening.”

The proposal was seconded by Alderman Matthew Magill of the DUP.

His DUP colleague Jeannie Archibald-Brown had once again called for the issue to be discussed in public, as the item initially appeared to be listed under the ‘In Confidence’ section of the meeting, closed to the public and Press. Contractual issues were due to be discussed behind closed doors later in the meeting.

Members of the Operations Committee had previously suggested that Bryson be invited to council so that reps could explain the problems being experienced by their constituents.
