SOUTH Antrim MLA Steve Aiken has called for an ‘immediate review’ of road safety measures on the Moira Road near Nutts Corner Market following the devastating accident that claimed three lives, including that of an unborn child.

The Ulster Unionist Party man revealed that a constituent, a registered nurse, attended his office in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The nurse, who was one of the first on scene, described the ‘harrowing’ experience of holding an injured woman as she passed away.

Dr Aiken said the emotional impact on those who witnessed the incident underscores the gravity of the situation.

“My constituent expressed deep concern about the long-standing dangers associated with this stretch of road, particularly around the entrance and exit to Nutts Corner Market,” he said.

“She was clear that these risks are well-known locally and cannot be addressed by law enforcement alone.”

In a formal letter to the Department for Infrastructure, the local rep has requested clarity on whether a risk assessment has been carried out on this section of the Moira Road, including traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and visibility.

He has also urged the Department to commit to a comprehensive traffic review, focusing on market operating days and peak traffic times.

“This is not about assigning blame,” he stressed.

“But given the tragic loss of life and repeated concerns raised by the community, it is both reasonable and necessary for the Department to act as a matter of urgency.”

The South Antrim MLA has asked for a written response outlining any actions the Department intends to take to reduce the risk of future collisions.

Dr Aiken also extended his ‘heartfelt sympathy to all those impacted by this terrible accident’, especially the families, relatives and friends of the deceased couple and their unborn child.
