Swann calls for AI controls

SOUTH Antrim MP Robin Swann has signed a significant Parliamentary Motion calling for ‘urgent Government enforcement action’ against social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and its AI tool, Grok.

The motion follows a wave of ‘appalling’ AI-generated material circulating on the platform, including non-consensual sexually explicit images and undressed depictions of women and children.

Ofcom has recently launched a formal investigation into X’s compliance with the Online Safety Act after reports surfaced of the tool being used to target minors as young as ten.

The EDM, backed by Mr Swann, condemns the failure of X and its subsidiary xAI to effectively moderate this material.

While UK legislation passed in 2025 criminalised the creation of intimate deepfakes without consent, the motion highlights that these laws have yet to be fully implemented, leaving a dangerous gap in protection.

Commenting on the motion, Mr Swann said: “The rise of AI-generated sexual abuse material is a depraved violation of privacy and a direct threat to the safety of women.

Utterly unacceptable

“It is utterly unacceptable that technology is being used to sexualise individuals without their consent.

“I am calling on the Government to move with the utmost urgency to bring the full force of the 2025 deepfake laws into effect.

“My priority is ensuring that our online safety laws are fit for purpose and that those responsible for creating or facilitating this abuse face the full consequences of the law.”

The motion calls on the Government to set out a clear timeline for enforcement action and to provide immediate protections for users.
