MALLUSK Community Action Group has been awarded the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest honour given to local voluntary groups in the UK, in recognition of its ‘outstanding contribution’ to community life in the Mallusk area.
The award was presented by the Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim, David McCorkell KStJ, at a special ceremony hosted by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council at Mossley Mill on Friday 13 February 2026.
MCAG aims to create a safe, welcoming and pleasant environment for everyone in the Mallusk area, delivering a wide range of community-led programmes that support well-being, reduce isolation and strengthen community connections.
Activities range from baby sensory playgroups and walking football to environmental projects and heritage initiatives.
While the group primarily serves residents of Mallusk, its reach also extends to neighbouring Templepatrick and Glengormley.
Operating in an area experiencing increasing industrialisation, MCAG works to build a strong sense of community, address environmental damage, improve safety and cleanliness, and tackle antisocial behaviour and a lack of local facilities.
In partnership with The Academy Sports Club Hub, the group has helped develop vital community space and now delivers educational and social programmes seven days a week. MCAG has also worked closely with Council partners to secure the Green Flag Award for Mallusk Cemetery, promoting local history while providing high-quality green space for people and wildlife.
The group’s achievements are driven entirely by a dedicated team of 13 volunteers and five trustees.
Their work includes establishing and refurbishing a community hub, delivering environmental improvements, organising seasonal community events, producing a quarterly newsletter delivered to over 600 homes, creating a village heritage trail, publishing local history books and managing award-winning open spaces.
From daily caretaking and playgroups to village clean-ups and large-scale community events, volunteers contribute enormous time, care and pride, with community events regularly attracting around 300 participants.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Leah Kirkpatrick, said: “This prestigious award recognises volunteers who go above and beyond in serving their communities through dedication, generosity and commitment. Mallusk Community Action Group’s volunteers exemplify these values every day, giving their time and energy to create a safer, more welcoming and connected community.
“The King’s Award for Voluntary Service belongs to every volunteer whose quiet, consistent work makes a lasting difference, and this recognition is richly deserved.”
