AS the anticipation mounts, Antrim Grammar School’s celebrated ‘Golden Generation’ senior rugby squad embarks on an unforgettable tour to South Africa this July, poised to challenge their skills against some of the most formidable school rugby teams on the globe.
This tour is not just a series of matches - it is a journey of personal and athletic growth, brimming with adventure and cultural experiences.
The tour kicks off in the vibrant city of Cape Town, where the team will face off against two renowned rugby schools: South African College Schools (SACS) and Rondebosch Boys’ High School.
Both institutions boast rich rugby traditions and have produced numerous professional players that have represented the Springboks, making these fixtures particularly challenging and prestigious.
Captain of the 1st XV is the indomitable Jack McNeilly. McNeilly, known for his tactical acumen and inspiring leadership, will be instrumental in steering the team through these tough matches.
Alongside him are star players such as Jonah Woolley, a standout from the Ulster Schools squad, and the versatile Jake Quigley.
Adomas Blazauskas, a powerhouse in both attack and defence, and Rhys McGrandles, the dynamic No. 8, will be key figures in maintaining AGS’s competitive edge.
On the wing the flying chopper Rio McKee is expected to make an impact and leading the ‘bomb squad’ on the front row will be vice-captain Eoin Byrne.
However, there is strength and depth courtesy of players from last year’s Medallion squad such as Callum Lavery and Alex Moss who have transitioned into the seniors seamlessly and are formidable opponents for any opposition.
Earlier in the year Callum Lavery was recalled into the Ulster Schools set up following glowing reports from several opposition coaches.
Though he is just 15-years-old, he has a huge physical presence and has made the Ulster Schools ‘summer squad’ and where most expect him to make the final cut.
Many see him as a key player for AGS moving forward and Callum alongside Alex Moss, Tom McNeilly and Dylan Bailie will be crucial assets in AGS’s bid to dominate their South African counterparts.
In addition to the intense on-field action, the team will also dive into thrilling off-field experiences.
One of the highlights includes a shark cage diving adventure, where players will come face-to-face with great white sharks that patrol Gansbaai waters of the west coast of South Africa, dubbed the ‘great white capital of the world’.
This adrenaline-pumping activity promises to be a bonding experience and a test of courage for the young athletes.
Durban: The Final Frontier
After their stint in Cape Town, the team will fly to Durban for the final and highly anticipated fixture against Greenwood College, famously known as ‘The Green Machine’.
Greenwood College is renowned for its physicality and disciplined play, posing a significant challenge for AGS.
The match promises to be a thrilling showdown, with both teams eager to showcase their prowess.
Durban will also offer the team a unique opportunity to witness rugby at its highest level. The boys will attend the final rugby union test between South Africa and Ireland, an event that guarantees world-class rugby and an electric atmosphere.
Watching these international giants clash will undoubtedly be an inspiring experience for the AGS players, providing them with valuable insights and aspirations for their own careers.
A Safari Adventure
No trip to South Africa would be complete without experiencing the country’s magnificent wildlife.
The team will embark on a safari, exploring the rich biodiversity of the African savanna. This excursion will allow the players to unwind from the rigours of their matches and marvel at the natural beauty and wildlife that South Africa has to offer.
Seeing lions, elephants, and other majestic creatures in their natural habitat will be an awe-inspiring experience, adding an educational and recreational dimension to the tour.
Danske Schools Cup
This tour is more than just a series of matches and adventures - it is a crucial strategic step in AGS’s preparation for the Danske Schools Cup in the 2024-25 season.
The experiences gained and the lessons learned in South Africa will be invaluable as the team aims to cement their legacy as one of AGS’s finest squads.
In total 61 players will travel and for the first time in recent history AGS will be fielding a 1st, 2nd and 3rd XV, an accolade that goes some way to underlining the impact that director of rugby Mr Orr has had in his seven-year tenure.
The leadership of Jack McNeilly will be a key factor for next year’s Schools Cup, but watch this space, as the rigorous competition in South Africa, coupled with the high-intensity training and diverse experiences, will undoubtedly enhance the cohesion, resilience, and tactical sophistication within this group of players.
Antrim Grammar’s rugby tour to South Africa is set to be a landmark event in the school’s recent sporting history.
The combination of challenging matches against top-tier schools, thrilling adventures, and cultural experiences promises to be an enriching journey for all involved.
As the team gears up for the Danske Schools Cup, this tour will not only test their mettle but also forge memories and bonds that will last a lifetime.
With their eyes set firmly on future glory, AGS’s golden generation of rugby players are pumped and ready to make their mark on South Africa soil!
