South Antrim Alliance MLA, John Blair has delivered a speech during an Adjournment Debate at the Northern Ireland Assembly, addressing the urgent and persistent risk of wildfires across Northern Ireland.
“Although the Assembly Adjournment debate was focused on Sliabh Beagh, which straddles Fermanagh and Tyrone, these wildfires are a serious risk in every constituency. The damage caused to our environment, wildlife, and invaluable peatlands is both long-lasting and deeply concerning. Although we may become more focused on floods and harsh weather as we move into colder months, the legacy of wildfires—deliberately set or otherwise—remains a critical issue that requires year-round vigilance and action.
“I welcome the recent progress made by Alliance AERA Minister Muir on his strategic framework for wildfires, which has been agreed by the Executive and will soon be launched. This framework provides clear priorities for future wildfire efforts, focusing on prevention, preparedness, response, recovery, and enforcement.
“The action plan, which will be co-designed by government bodies and local stakeholders, sets out a robust strategy to protect our most vulnerable ecosystems and will ensure that policies are delivered effectively.
“Our own natural landscapes here in South Antrim —including areas of peatland, upland habitats, and river corridors—face the threat of fire, whether directly or indirectly.
“The impact is felt not only by our environment and biodiversity but by local farmers, outdoor enthusiasts, and future generations who deserve to enjoy a vibrant, thriving landscape.
“It is a sad reality that these wildfires are more often than not deliberately started. To intentionally set a wildfire in areas of special scientific importance, where rare species and sensitive habitats are at risk, is simply a crime against nature. Safeguarding our natural environment must be a shared responsibility for government, agencies, and every local resident. It is imperative that we foster a culture of respect and vigilance to protect our natural landscape from further damage.”
