Friends in Antrim have smashed a fundraising target to honour the memory of Brendan Flanagan, affectionately known to locals as “Billy Bog Roll.”

Brendan passed away peacefully in hospital on 4th July 2025, aged 79, and has been remembered as “the face of Antrim” - a true local legend whose humour, warmth and character made him beloved by all who knew him.

Brendan earned his nickname during his years as a market trader and street seller, pushing a pram filled with toilet rolls, balloons, flags and dog toys. He became a familiar sight across Antrim and Nutts Corner Market, famously calling out, “Buy your doggy a toy for a pound!”

He was celebrated locally for his generosity and good humour, with one business even naming a burger in his honour in 2023.

In recent years, the community rallied to help refurbish Brendan’s bungalow after discovering he was living in difficult conditions — donating furniture, kitchen appliances and time to ensure he was comfortable.

He was later supported by many of the same friends who came together to give him “the send-off he deserved.”

Organiser Terry Dempster wrote: As many of you know, we recently said goodbye to Brendan Flanagan, affectionately known as “Billy Bog Roll” — a man who meant so much to so many, and someone we cared about deeply.

“While nothing can ever truly fill the space he leaves behind, we want to honour his memory in a lasting and meaningful way.

“Billy had no family to make arrangements for him, but he wasn’t alone — he had friends who cared.

“Those of us who knew him will always remember his unique character, his wit, and the good humour that could brighten anyone’s day.

“He was a beloved and familiar face around Antrim and Nutts Corner Market for many years, and we want to make sure he is not forgotten.

“We are raising funds to provide a proper headstone for his resting place — something simple but meaningful, so his name will be remembered and his life honoured.

“The total cost for the stone, engraving, and placement is £1500. In the spirit of Billy’s giving nature, any funds raised beyond this will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Unit Antrim Area Hospital.

“Whether you knew him personally or simply believe that everyone deserves to be remembered, your donation — no matter the size — will help ensure Billy is given the dignity and respect he deserves.

“Thank you for helping us preserve the memory of our friend. Even without family, Billy had a circle of people who cared — and that love continues on. Together, we can make sure he is not just buried, but remembered.”

By Monday, the target had been far surpassed, almost hitting £2000.
